Old Market / Market Area
In fact, hardly any of the buildings on the Old Market are actually old. The market was almost completely destroyed twice: The mediaeval structures were lost in the year 1631, during the Thirty Years War. The area was then rebuilt in Renaissance and Baroque style. But these buildings met the same fate as pretty much all of Magdeburg’s historic centre, and were destroyed by bombs in January 1945. Only house number 8 survived. Today, it serves as the home of the regional chamber of industry and commerce. Reconstruction during the 1960s took its cue from the original facades.
