Magdeburg Cathedral / Cathedral District
Construction of the cathedral as it appears today was begun in the early 13th century. The Benedictine monastery of St. Maurice, founded by Emperor Otto the first in the year 937, previously stood on this site. Following his legendary victory against invading Hungarians on Lechfeld plain, Otto, who was now known as “The Great”, began work to develop the monastery church into a basilica, thereby underlining his political power. In the year 968, the church became the seat of the newly founded archbishopric of Magdeburg.
