THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG
This unusual complex also has an unusual name: the Green Citadel of Magdeburg, one of the last architectural pieces by the famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Much of the roof was planted with grass, which gives some explanation for the artist’s choice of name. Hundertwasser worked on the design for this complex until shortly before his death in the year 2000. The Green Citadel was officially inaugurated in October 2005. Although it stands out a mile, it has found its place among the ensemble of Baroque facades and modern buildings on the street, called Breiter Weg. An East German prefab block used to be located at the site.
